ENGINEERING THE NEXT DECADE

AXION is a digital engineering studio building mission-critical systems for organizations operating at the edge of what's possible. We ship infrastructure that lasts decades, not quarters.

Six rules we
refuse to break.

These aren't aspirational values printed on a wall. They are operating constraints — the conditions under which we accept work, the standards we hold ourselves to, and the reasons our oldest client has been with us for nine years.

/01

Precision over volume

Every line item accounted for. We turn down work we cannot execute to a measurable standard, and we say so before the contract is signed.

/02

Single accountable engineer

One person owns the outcome from kickoff to post-launch. No handoffs to junior teams, no rotating account managers, no diffusion of responsibility.

/03

Designed to outlive the author

We write code for someone we will never meet, in a decade we will not see. Documentation, tests, and architecture decisions are deliverables, not afterthoughts.

/04

Written briefs, no ambiguity

Every engagement begins with a written scope signed by both sides. If we cannot describe it in prose, we cannot build it in code.

/05

Build only what must exist

Restraint is an engineering decision. We remove features, not add them. The smallest system that solves the problem is the one we ship.

/06

Fixed scope, fixed price

No hourly billing, no scope creep, no surprise invoices. The number we quote at the start is the number you pay at the end.

A closed-loop practice. Eleven years, one method.

AXION operates as a closed-loop engineering practice. We do not chase trends or stockpile talent. Every engagement begins with a written brief, a fixed scope, and a single accountable engineer. We measure our work in decades, not quarters. The systems we ship today are designed to be maintained by someone we will never meet, in a decade we will not see. This is the only definition of engineering we accept.

Mara Voss, Founding Engineer
AXION studio space

Founded in Brooklyn, 2014.

AXION began as a two-person workshop above a printing press in Williamsburg. The first client was a quantitative hedge fund that needed a trading system rebuilt in eleven weeks. We shipped it in ten.

Eleven years later, we are thirty-eight engineers, designers, and researchers split between Brooklyn and Berlin. We have never raised outside capital. We have never grown faster than our ability to maintain quality. We intend to keep it that way.

· Systems engineering· Applied research

Six disciplines,
one team, one method.

We do not sub-contract. Every discipline below is staffed in-house, on payroll, and held to the same written-brief standard.

/01

Systems Architecture

Distributed system design, event-driven topology, and capacity planning for systems that must remain available under adversarial conditions.

  • · Event sourcing
  • · Multi-region failover
  • · Capacity modeling

/02

Product Engineering

End-to-end implementation of internal tools, customer-facing platforms, and operational dashboards. Shipped, documented, and handed off.

  • · TypeScript · Rust · Go
  • · Internal platforms
  • · Customer-facing systems

/03

Design Systems

Component libraries, documentation sites, and accessibility frameworks built to be maintained by teams of one after we leave.

  • · Token architecture
  • · WCAG 2.2 AAA
  • · Multi-brand systems

/04

Infrastructure & DevOps

Kubernetes, observability, deployment pipelines. We build the platform your engineers want to deploy to, not the one they have to.

  • · Terraform · Pulumi
  • · Observability stack
  • · Zero-downtime deploys

/05

Applied Research

Prototyping, benchmarking, and build-vs-buy analysis for technologies you are not yet sure about. We tell you what we would do, not what is popular.

  • · 6-week sprints
  • · Written recommendation
  • · Reference implementation

/06

Technical Advisory

Standing retainers for leadership teams that need a second opinion on architecture, hiring, or vendor decisions from engineers who have shipped under pressure.

  • · Monthly cadence
  • · Written briefings
  • · On-call availability

say, in their words.

"AXION rebuilt our trading platform in fourteen weeks. The system has run uninterrupted for nineteen months since. I have stopped checking the dashboard — that is the highest praise I can offer."

"They are the only firm I have worked with where the written brief at the start matched the delivered system at the end. Exactly. No drift, no scope creep, no surprise add-ons."

"We hired AXION for an advisory engagement. They spent four weeks understanding our infrastructure, then told us not to build the thing we had asked them to build. They were right. We saved two years."

"What distinguishes AXION is not their code — though their code is excellent. It is their refusal to start work until they understand exactly what you need. That discipline is rare and worth paying for."

Thirty-eight engineers.
Four who set the standard.

The people below are the principal engineers who lead every engagement. Everyone else — thirty-four of them — is on the about page.

Mara Voss
/01 Brooklyn

Mara Voss

Founding Engineer

Started AXION in 2014. Sets the standard for written briefs. Refuses to ship code she would not maintain herself.

Daniel Okonkwo
/02 Berlin

Daniel Okonkwo

Principal Architect

Eleven years building distributed systems. Believes capacity planning is a moral act. Writes the architecture briefs.

Hye-Jin Park
/03 Brooklyn

Hye-Jin Park

Head of Design

Eight years in design systems. Holds the line on accessibility. Will reject a component that does not pass WCAG 2.2 AAA.

Rafael Mendoza
/04 Berlin

Rafael Mendoza

Infrastructure Lead

Runs the deployment pipeline. Has not caused a production outage in seven years. Maintains it that way on purpose.

We hire one engineer per quarter. No exceptions.

Six questions
we answer weekly.

If your question is not below, write to us directly. We answer every email within one business day, including the ones we decline.

We design, build, and ship digital systems — usually platforms, infrastructure, or internal tools — for organizations that need them to work without supervision. We do not do marketing websites, brand identity, or growth-hacking. We engineer systems that have to last.

Fixed scope, fixed price. We quote a single number at the start of the engagement after a one-week discovery phase. The number includes everything: architecture, implementation, documentation, handoff. If we go over budget, we absorb the cost. We have done this for eleven years.

Brooklyn and Berlin. We work across both offices simultaneously — most engagements are staffed with engineers from each. We do not have offshore contractors, and we do not subcontract. Everyone who touches your code is on our payroll.

Sometimes. We take on roughly two early-stage engagements per year — usually when the founding team has a written brief that demonstrates they understand the problem. We decline the rest. We are not a startup studio and we do not take equity; we bill for engineering work.

Eleven weeks, on average. The shortest was four weeks (an advisory sprint). The longest was thirty weeks (a full platform rebuild). We tell you the length before we sign the contract, and we hit it — we have shipped on time for ninety-four percent of engagements.

Public case studies are on the Work page. For confidential engagements — which is most of them — we share detailed references and architecture walkthroughs under NDA during the discovery week. We do not share client names without permission, and we never share code.
